I know what a lot of small business owners are thinking. Hey, I think I can build a website, I think I’ll do it myself. After all, how hard can it be? This is a common scenario and quite often one of two things happen.

First it’s harder than you think.
The first obstacle I see the Do It Yourself website builder face is that it’s harder than it looks. Even the drag and drop site builders can be confusing. Then you get into a more flexible solution like WordPress and you have a lot more decisions to make. First is doing the basic configuration. Then picking what add-on software you need. In WordPress the add-ons are called Plugins. There are over 60,000 plugins on the official WordPress repository. All of these decisions can be classified as shopping costs. After you find a plugin you want to use, you need to determine if it needs configuration. If so, that needs to be done and then there is sometimes the need to actually learn how to use the plugin. The same thing with themes and templates. Themes are more complex than they used to be. You often need to learn how to configure the theme and implement its features. On the good side, most modern themes don’t need you to build a child theme for customization. This last point does make building sites easier.

The second obstacle to the DIY website is it takes time and requires effort.
The Second problem I see is that most small business owners are busy people. They don’t have a lot of extra time to devote to learning new software, web design, and doing website maintenance. What I’ve seen is they don’t even do the mandatory and basic backup and maintenance of their business computers. If they’re not doing essential business computer maintenance, it’s unlikely they will do website maintenance. They have a business to run and fires to put out.
