California Writers Club in Anaheim, Orange County, CA.
Recently I have been getting out and about more and more. All of you who follow me know I like to write. On this summer day I ended up at the Orange County chapter of the California Writers Club held in Anaheim California at the Packing House.
It was interesting and I always like to see what other presenters do and how they structure their presentation.
You could tell the presenting author has done talks like this one before. When watching other speakers, I’m always asking myself, what do I like about this one, what could be better, and what don’t I like. This meeting was billed as a “learn how to develop story scenes, master class.” However, it was more about the author’s journey than a, “this is how you do it” presentation.
I need to say, the misunderstanding may not be anyone’s fault. There are a lot of places where a message can get mixed up. It could be that the author needed to go through several different channels to give the presentation. Each person receiving and then relaying the information is a chance for the meaning to change. This is then a problem with the system. To mitigate these types of misunderstanding I would suggest developing some form of continuous quality improvement process.
Another reason could be the author simply fell back onto what they have done in the past. They do author/book tours. So that is the kind of presentation they do. It is normal for behavioral inertia to kick in, especially if one is under a little stress. Behavioral inertia is only one reason why we must practice our presentation and public speaking in somewhat stressful situations. More realistic practice won’t guarantee a flawless performance, but it will increase the chances of one.
This type of presentation could become more interesting if it was about 50 to 70 percent shorter. It was too much about the author and not enough about how to develop a successful book.
Whiting a successful book and knowing how to teach others to write one are two different things.
It could be that the author is simply gifted and doesn’t know what they really do to make a successful story. I find this is one of the most common reasons sales people can’t teach other sales people how to succeed.
I would like to attend next month’s presentation. I was reassured it would be much more educational.
I think I was the odd one, in that I thought it was going to be a different kind of presentation. Most everyone in the audience seemed to like it. So it was a good match for the target group. However, I prefer presentations where I learn as much as possible for the time I’m spending to attend. Maybe I’m not part of their target market.
One thing that I look at when evaluating a presentation is how long it takes people to start checking their cell phones. When refining a presentation this is probably a good measure of when you should plan on wrapping up your talk.
That will do it for this little blog post.
