Who are the Big Players and Marketers in This part of California?
Big Box Stores and independent chain stores.
There are 8 Costco’s, 17 Walmart’s, and 20 Target stores in this part of North Orange County.
The do it yourself market in North Orange county.
For the home owner and do it yourself types there are 18 Home Depots and 9 Ace Hardware stores. You will also find a handful of other hardware stores to round out the offering in this category.
Competition for fast food dollars.
Fast food is popular in this part of the world and you’ll find approximately 51 McDonald’s and 33 Del Taco restaurants in the North Orange County market area. Do you have a Mac sack alternative?
I still offer no cost directory marketing for small mom and pop type stores in the North Orange County areas. The best way to get a listing is to join the business networking newsletter and attend a Zoom meeting, it’s free.
While many small retail stores could not survive during the Covid shutdown there are still opportunities for mom and pops stores in the region. I know a few of the little stores I used to shop at are no longer around, so I am looking for alternatives. In the meantime, big box stores and online sellers have gained much of that market share.
Marketing to tourists and out of towners.
Tourists and out of towners love North Orange County.
Within this area are some of Southern California’s most iconic tourist destinations.
Perhaps the most famous destination for tourists is Disneyland located in Anaheim. The Disneyland and convention center areas are the most active areas and have many opportunities for marketing to both tourists and locals. While the downtown area is bustling with activity, the more exclusive homes in the north east part of the city are an attractive market for many service businesses.
No new Airbnbs in Anaheim
A note about Anaheim is that the hospitality industry is very big here. The Anaheim hospitality industry has passed laws making new Airbnb type rentals almost impossible to get licensed.
The Disneyland area is home to free thinking out of town drivers.
I try to avoid driving in the Disneyland area because of the bad tourist driving behavior. They are the free thinking drivers. It’s not uncommon for them to make a right hand turn from the extreme left lane or a left turn from the extreme right lane, these are just some of the free thinking driving tactics you need to watch out for when in the Disneyland area. Three businesses that may be able to use this information are accident attorneys, insurance agents, and car towing services.
The other Theme Park Town.
Buena Park is home to the other tourist attracting theme park, Knott’s Berry Farm. Knott’s Berry Farm is no longer owned by the Knott’s family, but it’s still bringing in tourists as well as locals from surrounding cities.
Knott’s brings in a lot of dollars from outside the area. The right location along the Beach Boulevard entertainment corridor can provide high profile opportunities.
Along with Knott’s Berry Farm there are other notable entertainment venues in Buena Park.
Two unique entertainment establishments are Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament and Pirates Dinner Adventure. Both of these are high profile themed dining entertainment venues.
The Buena Park area provides business opportunities for all sizes of business, from large corporations to small mom and pop stores. So if you’re interested in marketing to the big crowds along Beach Boulevard or the local market, Buena Park has a lot of opportunities.
Fullerton
I have quite a few Fullerton listings in our dot com business directory. I enjoy the town of Fullerton and it has an interesting history.
I plan on participating in the Fullerton art walks, if they ever get into full swing again. At the time of this writing Covid is once again running rampant and threatening many entertainment and retail venues.
Do you market to college students?
Fullerton has a very large college age demographic. It’s home to two colleges and this age group is quite active in the retail ecosystem.
Fullerton also has some of the nicest houses in Orange County and is one of my favorite cities.
You are quite likely to see me around town taking photos or videos. If you see me come up and say hi. I always like chatting with people. Preferably you will have on a mask and keep a safe distance.
Huntington Beach Marketing opportunities.
Huntington Beach is one of the largest beach cities in Orange County. It has a population close to 200,000 of which about 77 percent speak English.
With more than 16 million beach visitors each year there is a lot of opportunity for mixing multiple marketing strategies and tactics.
One of the biggest attractions for out of towners is the dog beach. People bring their dog to dog beach from all over the South Western United States. I have met people and their dogs at dog beach from as far away as the Midwest states and occasionally even from the East Coast.
Another popular local attraction is Central Park. In the past I have used Central Park as a collection site and staging location for raising and getting supplies to the survivors of hurricane Katrina.
A world famous birding location is Bolsa Chica wetlands. My grandparents always called that beach, Tincan Beach. It has always been a popular beach area and in the olden days people would build little temporary structures on the beach.
Main Street and the pier are also popular places for both young and the more mature. The Main Street crowd tends to be larger than the crowds on 2nd street in Long beach and on Friday nights and holidays more rowdy as well. Main Street is a good location for retail and I have had friends with stores on both Main in Huntington Beach as well as 2nd Street in Long Beach. Both are good locations with slightly different demographics. Main Street attracts a lot more out of towners.
Garden Grove and marketing to classic car enthusiasts.
Garden Grove is home to the world famous Azteca restaurant on Historic Main Street. JJ no longer operates the restaurant, but the food is still the same. They also happen to have one of the largest collections of Elvis memorabilia West of the Mississippi. As a side note the food is the same as what JJ’s parents used to make in North Long Beach at their Mexico City restaurant.
During the summer there is the Friday Night Car Show on Historic Main Street. If you sell classic cars or car accessories this may be a good place to get the word out. It’s also a good place for those catering to the classic car demographic and pro police, firefighter, and veteran customers.
Commercial and industrial parks and districts
There are also commercial and industrial districts scattered throughout this area of Orange County. Perhaps the most substantial commercial/industrial areas are in the Northeast. For many years I lived close to the industrial area in Cypress and knew people who worked in that area. I will talk about industrial parks and districts another day.
Well that’s about it for this little write up.
I am wishing you the very best in life.
